Saturday mornings have a familiar rhythm for parkrunners everywhere — the early alarm, the quiet drive, the buzz at the start line. It’s a routine that feels comforting no matter where you are. But take that routine on the road, add a new location, and suddenly it becomes something else entirely. That’s the magic of parkrun tourism.
Recently, my own parkrun journey took me to Coffs Harbour on the New South Wales coast. It was the perfect way to kick off a family getaway — movement first, then letting the rest of the weekend unfold from there.

What is parkrun tourism?
At its simplest, parkrun tourism is completing parkruns away from your home event. In practice, it’s an easy way to explore new places, experience different communities, and start a trip feeling grounded before the holiday rush begins.
Do you know why and where parkrun originated?

This particular parkrun was always going to be a popcorn run for me. No pressure. No pace goals. Just showing up, moving my body, and enjoying where I was.
📍 Coffs Harbour parkrun — the essentials
Location: Park Beach Reserve, Surf Club Rd, Coffs Harbour NSW
Course type: Out and back
Terrain: A mix of concrete paths and grass
Elevation: Mostly flat with a few gentle rises
Vibe: Relaxed, friendly, and very welcoming
With a 7:00am start time, it’s an easy event to fit into a holiday weekend — early enough to beat the heat, but still leaving the whole day ahead of you.

My experience on the course

This is where Coffs Harbour really shines.
The course takes you along the ocean path, skirting the breakwall, jetty and foreshore, with the sea beside you for much of the run. It’s one of those courses where you catch yourself glancing sideways more than checking your watch — salt air, soft morning light, and waves rolling in beside you.
It’s simple and scenic, making it easy to settle into a comfortable rhythm. After a brief bottleneck at the start, the path opens up with plenty of space to move. I kept it deliberately cruisy. This wasn’t a day for chasing a personal best — it was about fresh air, ocean breezes, and enjoying the movement.
I let people pass, offered encouragement, and reminded myself that not every run needs to be about effort. Some runs are just about being present — and running along the coastline like this makes that feel easy.
Starting a trip this way always feels grounding. It sets a positive tone for the days ahead, and running with uninterrupted ocean views never hurts.

The heart of parkrun: community
No matter where you go, the spirit of parkrun feels familiar — and Coffs Harbour was no exception. The volunteers were outstanding. Smiling, encouraging, and genuinely happy to be there, they created the kind of atmosphere that makes everyone feel welcome.
With close to 500 participants on the morning we visited, it was a busy event. Runners, walkers, families, kids, prams, and tourists all shared the same path and finish funnel. That shared experience is what keeps people coming back week after week.
☕ Post-parkrun vibes

Post-run, my husband was waiting for us at the finish line, and after crossing with both of my daughters, we headed off together for coffee and breakfast at the Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary. Coffee and a BLT never tasted so good.
From there, it was straight into holiday mode. Runners and workout clothes were swapped for a cuter fit, coffees stayed in hand, and we wandered through the North Coast Regional Botanic Garden as the day slowly warmed up.
There’s something extra satisfying about starting your weekend with parkrun when you’ve got nowhere else to be and no schedule to keep. Just good times with family, a bit of movement, and that easy parkrun sense of community.
Starting the day this way made everything else feel earned — breakfast tasted better, the walking felt lighter, and the weekend officially felt like it had begun.
Is Coffs Harbour parkrun worth adding to your list?
Absolutely.
Coffs Harbour parkrun is perfect if you’re:
Travelling along the NSW coast
Looking for a relaxed, welcoming event
Wanting a scenic, coastal course
Running or walking with family or friends of mixed abilities
It’s the kind of parkrun that lets you run by feel, not by pace — and that’s exactly what a holiday parkrun should be.
